Amazing Amsterdam – Little Venice of the North

Amsterdam, also known as the Little Venice of the North, has more to offer than a casual tourist might expect.

As a historical trade city, Amsterdam is a melting pot of cultures, making it one of the most exhilarating cities in Europe.

Having been the home of famous artists such as Rembrandt, Breitner and Toorop, Amsterdam is a city rich in culture, art and architecture and will have art lovers drooling from one museum to the next. Even if you are not all that “artsy”, Amsterdam will have you reeling from its offer of shops, café’s, street artists, markets and nightlife before you know it.

The Aalborg Hotel is located in one of the most cosmopolitan, vibrant sections of Amsterdam. Whether you are a family with young children, are here for business or a student looking for freedom and a mind altering experience, I promise you Amsterdam will cater to your wildest dreams.

Having been born and raised in Amsterdam and being the product of an intercultural marriage between a stunning Dutch artist and the quintessential American cowboy, I was given a unique vantage point of this amazing city.

Let me show you the places to be:

  • The most sumptuous restaurants (the trendy, the child friendly or the ideal place for a business lunch)
  • The coolest clubs to keep you up until the crack of dawn
  • The most outrageous festivals, house parties and concerts
  • The finest galleries and the most elaborate museums
  • The hidden back alleys featuring artist communities, best places for antiques shopping, farmer’s markets and more
  • The best breweries in town
  • The most romantic bridges (excellent for proposals or honeymooners)
  • The historical “must sees”: including famous locations such as the Anne Frank House but also including hidden churches
  • The most peaceful parks for a picnic, jamming session or morning run
  • And even babysitting services, daytrips for families and indoor playing facilities for rainy days.

And much, much more. Believe me, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

I will even let you peek into Dutch culture to show you what really goes on behind all those narrow doors, up those impossibly steep steps.

You may find yourself wondering why there are bikes everywhere or why we like raw fish with onion, salty black candy (dropjes) and eat tons of cheese. And why did that red clad saint’s colorful bunch of helpers throw cookies at you in December? Hang in there. All will be revealed in due time.

Meanwhile, join me and be inspired.  And if you have any burning questions, or still (heaven forbid) find yourself bored on a rainy afternoon, then post a reply to this blog and the Aalborg Pack will sort you out.
